The largest alliance of nations ever envisaged in the galaxy. Its seats are Mater Humanitatis and Pater Humanitatis, a pair of space stations orbiting Earth that house the main offices and working areas of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and the Secretariat, the Supreme Court of Justice and Security Council respectively.
Formally named the United Human Nations of Terra, simply shortened to United Nations and UN, it serves as the leading body for policy-making and government for all humans. It is competent in fields such as economic, environment, energy and social policy, and is supported by several fleets.
The original United Nations were founded after WWII by the allied nations on the 24th October 1945, and have served as a questionably useful tool for diplomacy and peacekeeping since then. Highlights of UN intervention were the Korean War of 1950, the India-Pakistan border truce of 2026, countless missions in Africa, and a limited number of hastily approved missions during and after WWIII, including missions to secure the sea between China and Japan, the Evacuation of London, numerous missions to contain radioactive spread, and UNABI (United Nations Atlantic Bridge Initiative) to ferry support and materials between Europe and America during and after WWIII.
Resolution A/RES/144/385, titled "Declaration of the New Purpose of the United Nations for the Safeguard of Human Survival" was approved during the 144th Session of the General Assembly, and entered into validity late from the beginning of the war on the 1st of January 2095. Having already breached its own rules to work more effectively in the aforementioned missions, the UN assigned itself the powers it wields nowadays in a historical unanimous vote by the General Assembly. Notably half empty due to the devastation of nuclear war, the seats were kept even in the construction of Mater Humanitatis as a symbolic gesture of mourning, and now occupy the back rows of the General Assembly building.
Upon discovery of alien species, the emboldened power of the UN and the newly built station it was housed in proved more than sufficient to establish successful first contact. The legendary photo of the General Assembly delegates with three representatives from the known alien races was published in 2099 and has since become a powerful image to push the UN's efforts forward, hung in every UN office and agency as a reminder of their service.
The United Nations' legislative and executive powers function as they used to before Resolution 144/385. The General Assembly is in charge of most decision-making procedures, while the EcoSoc Council deals with economic, financial, social and cultural debates. The Security Council manages the UN fleets and military strategy for human-wide missions.
The way competences are split is complicated. National governments have full powers to make and enforce their own laws if such laws are not already enforced by a UN Resolution, in which case the nation must comply with it. The only fields of exclusive competence of the UN have to do with basic human survival, such as economic and energy policy especially on Earth, and social policy (rights, anti-discrimination law, etc.). The UN also has exclusive competence in first contact, research and development, stellar exploration and military strategy when humanity is involved as a whole. The UN relies on the good will of the leaders of each nation, who are official delegates of the United Nations and can be requested to an assembly at any moment. Resolution 144/385 and some following ones have since refined the UN's power, making it easier and faster to take decisions, abolishing certain veto conditions, implementing removal and no-confidence mechanisms and overall making the UN a powerful body able to act quickly and decisively, wielding the combined wisdom and power of all of humanity.
Nowadays, millions of humans and aliens work under the sky-blue banner of the United Nations, as ambassadors, clerks, sailors, engineers, scientists and blue-collar employees. Given its wide margin of operation, vast funding and exceptional public trust, the UN has become the most respected and revered organization in the galaxy.
The United Nations manages a number of fleets, headed by the United Nations Naval Command in Pater Humanitatis, the sister station of the Mater Humanitatis around Earth. The United Nations Naval Command chief, Navy Central Admiral Thomas Whitaker, sits in with the UNSC delegates together with Chief of Naval Operations Carlo Cattaneo, who advises the Council and organizes the UN's forces.
1st Fleet, Solar Defense, "Sol Watch": commanded by Admiral Karl Scheer, it is tasked with protecting Earth and the sun, and is often docked at Pater Humanitatis or in orbit of Earth. Its flagship is the Battleship Dignity. The Sol Watch is considered the last standing force of humanity in cases of total collapse of the Navy, and has therefore gained a mythical status as the last defenders of Earth. These sailors are proud, if not a little macho, and often considered among the best in their field.
2nd Fleet, Southern Border, "Traffic Cops": commanded by Admiral Alexandre Darian, it is tasked with patrolling the systems of Sirius, Barnard's Star and Alpha Centauri on the edge of human space. Its flagship is the Battleship Foresight. The name stems from the extreme amounts of stellar traffic these systems see, and how often this fleet is tasked with resolving so-called "void road rage" incidents. 2nd Fleet sailors are hard-working, very colloquial people, often speaking multiple languages to deal with the diversity of people they encounter.
3rd Fleet, Northern Border, "Frontier Guard": commanded by Admiral Francisco Noriega, it is tasked with patrolling the systems of Eta Cassiopeia and Proxima Centauri, on the edge of human space and near the Kosidian home system. Its flagship is the Supercarrier Benevolence. The Frontier Guard is aptly named, as the northern border is the new trend in human expansion. While considered a slightly more enticing position, 3rd Fleet sailors are one of the few trained specially to deal with possible first contact, hostile or not. Frontier Sitters are professional, if not a little paranoid.
4th Fleet, Support and Administration, "Angel Fleet": commanded by Admiral Nathan Farragut, it is made up of ships present everywhere across space, mostly non-military. These ships carry ambassadors, ferry politicians and leaders, carry supplies and undertake rescue and humanitarian missions. The Angel Fleet may be made up of rugged engineers, politicians and medics, but it is regarded with ultimate respect by the others as the name suggests. When a ship is in distress, the Angels respond. When a colony requires assistance, the Angels arrive within hours. The sailors of the 4th Fleet are everyday heroes whose enemy is plasma fires, mass-casualties, failing nuclear reactors, famines and droughts.
5th Fleet, the Expeditionary Fleet: still lacking a nickname, it is commanded by Admiral Usami Goro, and is a newly established fleet of high-tech research and exploration ships intended to boldly go where no one has gone before, to explore uncharted systems for new life and new civilizations. Its flagship is the Cruiser Everest, captained by the Admiral himself. The 5th Fleet is the new, fresh face of the UN Navy, made to explore, research and plant the blue flag on new planets.

United Nations Naval Command naming conventions are as follows:
Frigates, the smallest class of ship, are named after minerals and gems (UNS Tourmaline),
Destroyers, escort ships meant to attack in groups, are named after animals and their classes (UNS Great White),
Cruisers, large, powerful ships usually escorted by destroyers, are named after mountains and rivers (UNS Mont Blanc, UNS Nile),
Battleships and Carriers, the largest ships in the fleet, are named after positive attributes and famous ships in history (UNS Benevolence, UNS Hood).
Dedicated research ships are named after scientists and heavenly bodies (UNS Marie Curie, UNS Nebula), engineering and support ships after inventors and mythos concepts (UNS Edison, UNS Agamennon). Other ships are typically named by the first captain that serves aboard them.
