Sol 2400, albeit large in scale, takes life with the characters that play it. Cadets of the United Nations Naval Academy thrust into a world of killer robots, space ghosts and many, many broken buttons, these five brave sailors are the protagonists of the setting's main campaign and story. Sailing aboard the UNS Mae Jemison, a rickety frigate held together by hope, duct tape and the Chief Engineer's wrath, they traverse the stars.
Here are our intrepid heroes:
The communications officer of the Mae Jemison, the ship's ears and her voice. Lingyun is a young Chinese woman from an illustrious family in the Jincan Pharmaceuticals' yakuza-like corporate structure. The daughter of Bai Weiwei, CEO of Hanshima Medical, her family's influence was not unrecognized by the Recruitment Office or the Academy, fearing a political push by Jincan. They weren't wrong, of course, and Hanshima would love nothing more than to conclude a lucrative deal with the UN's administration, possibly in the medical sector. As the unwilling victim of the cold war between Jincan and the Navy, Lingyun finds herself under scrutiny no longer just by her family, but by the admiralty too.
The charming pilot of the Mae Jemison, awaiting a callsign. A Venusian, Oliviere was born aboard the great aerostatic cities in the upper atmosphere of the planet, and found his calling in petty crimes, wearing sunglasses and chewing toothpicks. Despite it all, the stars burned ever bright, and the dream to feel the rumble of a starship and the great perfume of engine coolant could not be suppressed. When the white hulls of UN recruitment barges came by, the choice was obvious: rot in the low orbit of the planet, amid the grumbling workers and the decay, or join something greater. Perhaps now is the time to show the universe what a Venusian can do.
While it is not common, but also not illegal, adoption of Skrell children exists, and Mucalinda is one such example. A Skrellian girl raised by an enormous Indian family, she grew up among a hundred brothers and cousins and nephews, a sore thumb in family pictures. Nevertheless, she was loved by her parents, and they were more than delighted (they cried) when she expressed an interest in the medical field, and even more delighted (they cried even more) when she joined the UN Academy. On the Jemison, she is the newest member of the medical department - maybe here in space, her infinite curiosity will be sated. Just keep her away from the surgical tools.
A bright young hacker and tinkerer, thrust into the chaotic engineering department of the Jemison. Years ago, Hanzo was a Robin Hood, a revolutionary, leading a group of rebellious hackers around Japanese metropolises to extract any juicy gossip, blackmail and criminal cover-up files from the country's gigacorporations. When the long arm of the law and the even longer arm of private security finally closed in, the UN's Amnesty and Criminal Recovery Program was the best choice to avoid jail time. And who knows, maybe the rebel work can continue even on the Mae Jemison.
Some join for glory, others for money, but a lot find themselves at the Recruitment Office out of desperation, boredom, or a blurry future. One such man is Ibrahim, a Lunar with an unsure fate and a cloudy past. Such is the fate of millions in the space age, left behind on planets and moons that once were the future, numbers in the cosmic game and dwarfed by the scale of corporate cargo carriers and warships. The choice to join the UN, and its security division was, well, not exactly a choice, but the "redbands" are the ones with the most stories told about them, anyway. Maybe legends will be told of Ibrahim Seraphino, with his rifle and his courage.
